Tell the Attorney General to respond to the merits of our complaint
CalFire is now preparing to send more fire tax bills to people in the so-called State Responsibility Area.
Taxpayers will begin receiving the next round of fire tax bills in March with those living in counties beginning with the letter “A” receiving their bills first. These bills will continue to come once a year until such a point as our lawsuit is resolved in our favor.
While lawsuits take a long time, we believe the State’s lawyers are purposely using delay tactics in the lawsuit so that they can keep collecting this unfair tax. Rather than respond to our concerns that the tax was passed illegally in violation of Prop. 13, the State continues to file “Demurrers,” which are legal arguments that the lawsuit is not allowed.
Kamala Harris, California’s Attorney General, runs the State’s legal office and is an elected officialaccountable to YOU as a citizen. You can make yourself heard by calling the Attorney General’s office and telling them to respond to the merits of our complaint.
While the judge may ultimately rule for either party, tell the Attorney General that hundreds of thousands of rural Californians affected by the fire tax at least deserve to have their day in court.
You can reach the Attorney General by phone at (916) 445-9555 or click here to fill out her online comment form.
When you receive your bill, you can file the Petition for Redetermination found onFireTaxProtest.org again even if you have already filed it in previous years. Filing the Petition for Redetermination annually is the safest way of ensuring your refund should we prevail.
